The Carlsbad Caverns of New Mexico have stunning and remarkable mineral deposits that are shaped like icicles, highlighting the cave’s surface and allure. There are hundreds of thousands of tourists who come to see this beautiful cave all year round.
However, in recent years it has been found that there is actually an invisible hazard that has the ability to put any visitors in danger. Although many people believed that the worst thing that can happen during a visit is the possibility of getting lost in one of the dozens of rooms, this has nothing to do with the actual threat.
From time to time, these caverns discharge noxious gases, such as radon, which has been related to lung cancer. These gases form in the basement of the cave, but they can scope through the caverns, affecting all the people who are in them at the moment.

I have been to several of these n so have my adult children with their young families. You FOLLOW the rules and you will be ok!!

I myself haven’t been to any of those places but being from Cherokee NC with the Great Smoky Mountains neighboring our Reservation, you see people taking risks all the time. Of course everyone loves seeing the wildlife but when they want to crowd up around the elk, putting themselves and the elk in danger, is not smart at all. The same goes for bears who are even more dangerous and to some people they don’t care! Clingman’s Dome and the Chimneys are other great places to see but not without risks. Not that far of a hike but the high elevations, steep paths to the top and sometimes high winds are unseen hazards to remember.

Pure sensationalism. I’ve been to several of these places and never felt in danger. Follow the posted rules and you’ll be fine.
I have been to most of thee places and always felt safe because I can walk and chew gum at the same time, ( i. e. obey the signs and rules.)
Been to Pike Peak and we took the Tram, it’ a long but has some fantastic views. We looked at the road when we enjoying the top and my son and I said NO Thanks on the road it’ dangerous.
Yes, we foolishly hiked Great Sand Dunes National park with the wrong shoes and no water. It was very hot and pushed my asthmatic wife to the edge trying to make it to the top. Medrano Creek was actually flowing when it shouldn’t have. That was some help to cool our feet. We are older but should have been wiser. Never saw the quicksand that this article mentioned. Good thing!
As a photographer I have been to 6 out of the 8 locations. As long as you obey the warning signs you will be okay, however some people just put themselves in harms way. In return it is the individuals fault. The warning signs are there for a reason.
I totally agree. i have been to several of these also. Follow the rules, use common sense and you will be fine.
